Moving requires a fair amount of organisation, even when you’re not moving very far away.
If you decide to hire a moving company, be wary of “fake” companies that advertise in free papers; in case of a problem, you will have nowhere to turn. National companies are a good idea if you are changing region since they have offices and warehouses countrywide. Local companies offer quality services.
Shop around and ask for an estimate in writing, which will protect you if need be. Beware of companies that provide you with a price over the phone. Distance and cubic content are not enough to provide an estimate. Other criteria are involved, such as accessibility, the width of stairs, whether or not there is an elevator, etc.
The company must propose several formulas :
- The all-inclusive package: you don’t do anything, the movers take care of everything. This very simple formula is also the most expensive one.
- The standard formula: the company packs the most fragile items and you take care of things like clothes, books, and items unlikely to break or that don’t need to be covered by warranty.
- The economical formula: you pack everything. This formula is the riskiest in case of breakage. Warranties only apply to items packed by the Professional.
In any event, the estimate must include :
- the company’s name and address
- its identification number (SIREN, SIRET, RCS)
- the date of the estimate
- the date of the move
- the pick-up and delivery address
- the distance to travel
- the volume to transport
- the formula chosen
- the price to pay, with and without taxes (HT and TTC)
Warranties vary from one moving company and one formula to another. Always carefully read the general terms and conditions before signing. If need be, take out extra insurance. This is optional but guarantees better indemnification.
Be sure to point out any damage to the movers and mention it in writing on the end of work declaration they must have you sign before leaving. Then, send a registered letter to the company within 3 days.
