Making your own compost

All organic waste is concerned: vegetable peelings, leftovers, garden waste, etc.

Composting is the aerobic decomposition (requires air) of organic biodegradable matter performed mainly by micro-organisms (bacteria, fungi, insects, etc.), in other words, naturally. But to compost successfully, you must know about mixing! All organic waste can be composted but some waste does not decompose as easily as other waste (hard waste, shells, seeds of such plants as tomatoes). Other matter however, such as plastic, synthetics, and factory lumber, cannot be composted..

To make a quality compost, make sure you mix your compost well to aerate the matter and ensure even decomposition.

The compost must be humid without being wet. If there isn’t enough humidity, the decomposition process will not take place. And too much humidity will prevent air circulation and slow the process right down.

The secret to a good compost? Regular monitoring… The results of decomposition will transform the soil into humus.

There are several different ways of making your own compost as well as a variety of different materials you can use :

  • the compost heap: consists of throwing waste directly on the soil. In this case, you have no limitations as far as volume is concerned and waste is always accessible and visible. The heap is directly on the ground. Ideally, well protected from the wind.
This is the best solution for those that have the room and don’t want to devote too much time to it. Inconveniences include the "unsightly" heap and slow decomposition. It is also exposed to unpredictable weather and animals.
  • the compost bin : this entails composting in a wooden, metal, or plastic container. In this case, the volume to compost is reduced and not subject to the vagaries of the weather.
The overall dimensions are marginal, the process is faster, and you don’t have an unsightly heap of decomposing waste. This method however only suits small volumes and calls for frequent monitoring to avoid a lack/excess amount of humidity.
You can buy your composting bin in a garden centre or build one yourself..

The process itself takes about 2 months.

The compost is ready when it is homogenous and has a pleasant earthy smell, its texture should be fine and crumbly You shouldn’t be able to recognise the original waste.

Unfinished, you can use your compost as mulch for the soil or at the foot of trees.

Finished, it is not only a great and “free” organic amendment, it is also a very good growing medium. Last but not least, never sow directly on compost, mix it with humus.

Conclusion: plant food that is environmentally friendly, economical, and completely natural.
